Groovy 2LP set that brings together some of Cal's best Latiny sides for Verve – tracks that shine and sparkle with wit, imagination, and just plain groove! The set's a nice one in that a lot of these cuts are hard to find on the original albums – especially in decent enough shape to play. Titles include "Hip Vibrations", "Morning", "Soul Motion", "Soul Burst", "Alonzo", "Reza", "Moanin", "Manteca", "Azul", "Insight", and "Curacao". Fantasy, Early 60s. Very Good
A really great reading of the West Side Story score – one that's better than most of the other ones floating around from the time! Of course, part of the reason for that is because the session's got some super-hip scoring from the great Clare Fischer – just starting out here, but doing ... LP, Vinyl record album
A Fuego Vivo
Concord, 1982. Near Mint-
A Fuego Vivo is a live septet set with the latin vibes master out front of Mark Levine on keys, the great percussionist Panco Sanchez on congas, and Gary Foster on alto and flute. It's a pretty atypically frenetic set for such a late date – with wonderfully tight, yet still quite jamming ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, Early 60s. Good+
Well, in our opinion, Cal went Latin right from the start, practically. Still, this "Goes Latin" LP is one of his best of the genre from the old days, and features a host of great players like Lonnie Hewitt, Chombo Silva, Mongo Santamaria, Paul Horn, and Willie Bobo. The album includes ... LP, Vinyl record album
Good Vibes
Concord/Picante, 1984. Very Good-
A very nice set of mellow west coast Latin vibes from Cal – sort of an updating of his classic 50s San Francisco groove on Fantasy, done with a host of California players that includes Roger Glenn, Poncho Sanchez, and Gary Foster. The record features a remake of Cal's big hit from the 60s ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1976. Very Good-
One of the fantastic electric Cal Tjader sessions from the 70s – with that mixture of vibes and electric piano that made his work of the time take on an even funkier sound than before! Lonnie Hewitt's at the keyboards here – and he's got a sly, slinky groove that's totally great – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tjader
Fantasy, Late 60s. Very Good-
An excellent album from legendary vibist Cal Tjader – and one of his truly electric albums! A key factor to the greatness of this one is keyboardist Al Zulaica – who plays some amazing Fender Rhodes on the album, really unlocking a whole new sound of Cal's vibes in the process! The ... Mondo Cane 2
Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A sweet return of the cool sounds that Kai Winding cut on his Soul Surfin album – not really jazz, but a wicked hybrid of groovy 60s modes – set to larger orchestrations this time around, but still featuring some great ondioline from Jean Jacques Perry! Perry's instrument is really ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve Years 1948 to 1950
Verve, Late 40s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Part 2 of a series of double LPs issued by Verve in the late 70s compiling Bird's classic recordings for Verve under the direction of Norman Granz. Loads of landmark bop performances are documented here, mostly smaller groups, but several with orchestral backing too, with sidemen that include Max ... LP, Vinyl record album
Coleman Hawkins All Stars At Newport
Verve, 1957. Near Mint-
Three great horn players with plenty of space to solo freely – working together on the stage of the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957! The combo's one put together for the date, but they groove together nicely – rhythm by the trio of Ray Bryant on piano, Al McKibbon on bass, and Jo Jones ... LP, Vinyl record album
