4.90 5

A great little 70s album by George Benson – and kind of a sleeper amidst the bigger hits of his CTI work! The record's a nicely stripped-down affair, with arrangements by Don Sebesky that don't ever really get in the way of Benson's guitar, and instead provid a perfect platform for him to lay down some wonderfully dark and chromatic chord changes. The set kicks off with a Phil Upchurch-conceived funky version of "Take Five", and Phil also contributed the funky number "Full Compass" to the record. The real standout, though, is George's own "My Latin Brother", a great Chicano funk number that's a perfect outing for Benson's dope guitar! One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark ... Bossa Nova
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good
Very nice, very tight little bossa nova set by Eddie Harris from his early days at Vee Jay! The groove is very open, and Eddie's still at the stage where he can really cut the stuff. His solos ring out hard and cold above some great Lalo Schifrin arrangements, and Lalo also plays piano on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the few albums ever cut by reedman Rudolph Johnson – a hell of a saxophonist, and one with a great ability to combine the spiritual with the searing – a bit like Joe Farrell at his CTI best, but not as freewheeling – nicely focused, and a little bit funky in all the right ...
