LP, Vinyl record album

4.60 11

Smooth and sophisticated 80s soul from O'Bryan – most of it co-produced with Don Cornelius, of Soul Train fame, who helped O'Bryan get his start. The album's got a few tracks that go a bit over the top, but the better tunes are kicked back and nice and mellow – grooving in a modern Capitol Rare mode, with some slight pop soul touches added in on the vocals. Tracks include "It's Over", "Love Has Found A Way", "Doin Alright", "Can't Live Without Your Love", and "Still Water (Love)". (Cover has light wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Solid
Capitol, 1984. Near Mint-
Darn solid work from Ashford & Simpson – one of the duo's biggest albums for Capitol Records, and a great set from their 80s run for the label! The groove here is a bit more heavy on keyboards and beats than before, but the pair still keep things plenty soulful with their positive, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Black Rock
Volt, 1971. Very Good
An album that's every bit as great as the title might imply – heavy guitar-based funk from the second version of The Bar-Kays – one that uses the new instrumental focus to push a groove that's much more black rock than before! There's still a bit of trumpet from the past, but the sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cold Sweat
King, 1967. Very Good
A stone classic from Brother James – a wonderful 60s album built around the incredible track "Cold Sweat", served up here in a massive two-part version, and surrounded by a good range of material that really show James in a great variety of styles! The Godfather's vocals burst out ... LP, Vinyl record album

United Artists, 1975. Near Mint-
A tasty set from Mandrill – one of their first records away from the Polydor label, but every bit as great as later efforts for that company, especially Mandrilland. The overall sound is a bit smoother than some of their full-out funky albums – but in a way that really helps blend ... LP, Vinyl record album

Justments
Sussex, 1974. Very Good-
The fourth album from Bill Withers and an overlooked gem recorded for Sussex – and a great bit of funky soulful stuff in the best Withers tradition – a record that's sadly kind of withered in relative obscurity for far too many years! The soul in Withers voice is in as fine of form as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chaka
Warner, 1978. Near Mint-
The classic late 70s solo debut by Chaka Khan – one that made Chaka a major star, and deservedly so! This beautiful album showed that she could stand very well on her own two feet without the help of Rufus, thank you. Of course, she's got some fantastic help from Arif Mardin, who works as ... Sweet Exorcist
Curtom, 1974. Very Good Gatefold
A wonderfully wicked album from Curtis Mayfield – one that's not nearly as famous as his Superfly set, but which is every bit as great! The groove here is lean, mean, and totally righteous – a bit more stripped-down than some of the rumbling funk of other Curtom efforts, and served up ... LP, Vinyl record album
