Book (Item 558611) University Of Illinois, 1991/2003 — Condition: New Copy

An excellent book on the role of women in avant garde cinema – and in avant cinema in general! You can't tell the history of experimental film in the US without talking about Maya Deren – and Lauren Rabinovitz does a great job of laying out Deren's key films amidst the rise of underground cinema in the postwar years – then goes on to do an equally great service to Shirley Clarke – tracing her early roots in experimental film to her important verite contributions of the 60s! Joyce Wieland's structural films also get a key examination – and Rabinovitz ends with a look at the overall growth of avant film through the 20th century. Softcover, 252 pages, with some black and white images. (Second Edition.)  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
