They're not lying with the title of this great little set – as Don Elliott blows his unique horn with a very mellow tone! The instrument is kind of a bigger version of a flugelhorn – and is used by Don in a laidback combo that also features trombone from Billy Byers, trumpet from Howie Reich, and baritone sax from Danny Bank – all deep sounds that set up a bank of color for Elliott to work with in his most vivid way. Other players include Hal McKusick on alto and flute – but working without as much of the sharper, cutting tones of other 50s albums – and rhythm is from Barry Galbraith on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass, and Mel Zelnick on drums. Titles include "Sposin", "The Lamp Is Low", "Mellophone Mambo", "Summer Setting", and "With The Wind & The Rain In Your Hair". (Original red label pressing, with deep groove. Cover has a split top seam, some wear, and a peeled gloss finish, with an ink stamp and some light stains on the back.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Chase Is On (70s pressing)
Bethlehem, 1957. Very Good+
A killer – and one of the greatest records ever cut on Bethlehem! Charlie Rouse and Paul Quinichette go head to head in a hard-blown session that's very different than most of the work on Bethlehem – grooving in a free-wheeling "chase" mode, as you might guess from the title ... West Coasting
Bethlehem, Mid 50s. Very Good-
One of the better of Bethlehem's west coast sessions from the 50's, and a split LP that brings together 2 different sessions – one by trumpeter Conte Candoli, and one by drummer Stan Levey (both sessions, we think, were issued on 10" originally). The Candoli session features a quartet ... LP, Vinyl record album

East Coast Jazz/5
Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good+
One of the best (and few) sessions ever cut as a leader by bassist Milt Hinton – a crucially important player on his instrument, and an important force behind countless sessions of his generation! Bethlehem, Mid 50s. Very Good
An excellent swinging Bethlehem session from the mid 50s – one that's recorded in LA, but with a sound that's way hotter than most of the label's other west coast sides! Bethlehem, Mid 50s. Very Good
A sweet little session with great mellow sound – and one of the few records ever cut by vibist Joe Roland! Forget the hokey kangaroo picture on the cover, because the record's a mighty sweet set of 50s modern jazz – played by some key musicians from Australian who were working in the US at the time!
