George & Sleepy (Japanese paper sleeve edition)
CD (Item 595340) Think (Japan), 1969 — Condition: New Copy
An incredible record from two of the biggest Japanese jazz talents of the 60s – and a set that may well be one of the best that either of them cut in the decade! Drummer George Kawaguchi's got an approach to the kit that's usually straight ahead, and full-on – but here, he diverges nicely, and mixes it up – going for some slightly sensitive rhythms at times, mixed with other driving moments that almost have an Art Blakey vibe – all to produced a perfect setting for reedman Hidehiko Sleepy Matsumoto, a player who's usually recorded in relatively straight ways – but who opens up here with a soulful swing that's just brilliant! Some passages actually have the players in kind of searching, searing mode – before returning to a straighter groove – and the album features the tunes "GS Blues", "Viet Nam", "Sweet & Lovely", "Tuesday Samba", and "On Green Dolphin Street".
