A rare treat by Gary Bartz – and very different than most of his other work! The album's a small group session – with Charles Mims on piano, Curtis Robertson on bass, and Howard King on drums – recorded with the feel of a looser soul jazz set on Black Jazz or Strata East. Mims' is great on piano, and working with Bartz, the pair come up with some wonderfully soulful numbers that have a very earthy feel. Tracks include "Ju Ju Man", "Pisces Daddy Blue", and "Chelsea Bridge" – plus a version of "My Funny Valentine", with vocals by Syreeta.  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

For The Good Times
Prestige, 1973. New Copy (reissue)
One of Rusty Bryant's last albums for Prestige – recorded in that more-electric mode that graced the label's albums of the year 1973 – but in a style that's still pretty darn nice! The group's still a small combo – with Rusy on tenor and alto, plus with Hank Jones on electric ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz Sahib
Savoy, 1957. New Copy (reissue)
A very nice session by baritonist Sahib Shihab – and one of the most far-reaching works he cut in this country before disappearing to Europe for the better part of the 60s! The album's broken into two different groups – both have Sahib playing with Phil Woods on alto and Benny Golson ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Sugar
Capitol, 1971. New Copy (reissue)
A fantastic album, and one of Jimmy's hardest to find! The set is quite different than most of Jimmy's other work – and it features short, hard, funky tracks that feel more like obscure 7" singles than any of Jimmy's straighter soul jazz work. It almost sounds like The JBs are backing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 1964. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)
A classic – and virtually the blueprint for all spiritual soul jazz recordings of the 70s! John Coltrane's at a perfect point here – balanced between the modal hardbop of earlier years, and the freer soloing of his last few recordings. He links the traditions together with a majestic ... Opened But Hardly Touched (180 gram pressing)
FMP/Cien Fuegos (Austria), 1980. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)
One of the first great sessions from FMP Records in the 80s – and an album that really shows the creative growth at the label since its start! The music is played by a very hip trio – with Peter Brotzmann on e flat clarinet, tarogato, tenor, alto, and baritone – plus Harry Miller ... LP, Vinyl record album

Some of the coolest, hippest albums Roland Kirk ever recorded – Slightly Latin, Now Please Don't You Cry Beautiful Edith, I Talk With The Spirits, and Rip Rig & Panic – each very different in their own way, and a key part of his great leap forward in the 60s! Larry Coryell With The Wide Hive Players
Wide Hive, 2011. New Copy
A really old school jam from guitarist Larry Coryell – one that takes us back to some of the most tripped-out sounds of his early years! Given the cover, you can definitely expect a psychedelic influence to the music – and the group here really helps Larry get back to his roots – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ghetto Reality
Folkways/Mississippi, 1970. New Copy (reissue)
Kind of silly – but also pretty darn hip! Nancy Dupree was one of the most righteous music teachers you could ever have – and here, she's working with some young kids from the rough side of Rochester, in an album of simple tunes that have a surprisingly soulful edge to them.
