Ruminations In New York
CD (Item 398841) ESP, 2004 — Condition: New Copy
Wonderful solo work from Ellis Marsalis – best known as the father of Wynton and Bradford, but a heck of a great pianist with a sound that's far deeper and more complex than you might guess from his New Orleans roots! This is the kind of record that might have been cut more in the 50s than in recent years – a subtly-done sound portrait of New York, played by Marsalis with a tone that's rich in color, and which paints these expressively vivid images without ever going too far. We're really surprised at the beauty of this one – and the record's got a fullness that goes far beyond simple solo piano – a lyricality that we'd never known in Marsalis' work at all. Titles include "Orchid Blue", "Things That You Never Were", "A Moment Alone", "Haven's Paradise", "After", "Tell Me", and "Zee Blues". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
