Gilles Peterson Presents Havana Cultura – The Search Continues

CD (Item 589850) Brownswood (UK), 2011 — Condition: New Copy

A hell of a double-header – almost like getting two albums in one – both records put together as part of Gilles Peterson's recent dip into the Cuban scene! CD 1 features a tight performance from the Havana Cultura Band – a contemporary ensemble, but who work with a really rootsy blend of modes – lots of older Afro-Cuban elements, with funkier elements, a few contemporary touches, and an overall sound that's far more global than straight Latin – but in ways that are quite different than contemporary Latin pop! Leave it to Peterson to foster a groove this revolutionary – and your ears will delight to cuts that include "Vamos Al Mar", "La Mulata Abusadora", "Orisa", "Male Con Habanero", "Saxolude", "Muestrame Lude", and "Espera Mi Gente". CD 2 is great, too – and almost a further extension of the mode – as it features music from the new Cuban underground, all hand-picked by Peterson, and offering up a blistering array of sounds and styles that show that there's been plenty happening in the twilight years of Castro! Titles include "Afro Nupa Andandao" by Djoy, "Peze Cafe" by Creole Choir Of Cuba, "Kimbiseros" by Afrikun, "Bailalo" by Vince Vella, "Chica Cubana" by Interactivo, and "Me Queda Voz" by Golpe Seko.  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
