A musical – but a pretty darn soulful one, as you might expect from the mighty Melvin Van Peebles! The soundtrack features tunes from Van Peebles early 70s stage production Don't Play Us Cheap – an attempt to bring the modes explored in his film work to the theater – and given the range of unusual tunes and odd timings for most of these numbers, the whole thing really must have been something to see! Peebles wrote and produced the whole thing – but gets some help on the music from funky Harold Wheeler – and performers in the cast include Rhetta Hughes, Joshie Jo Armstead, and Mabel King – all of whom bring some pretty soulful vocals to the record. There's a few great instrumentals – like "Bad Character Bossa Nova", "Break that Party", and "The Washingtons Thing" – and other titles include "Quartet", "The Phoney Game", "Saturday Night", "The Bowsers Thing", "If You See A Devil Smash Him", "Quittin Time", "Ain't Love Grand", "I'm A Bad Character", "Fest On Me", and "The Eight Day Week". (Includes the booklet. Cover has a cutout hole and some edge wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Stax, 1969. Very Good+
Perfect work from The Staple singers – a tight blend of gospel soul and Memphis funk, handled here with a tightness that avoids all the cliches of some of the group's later work! The group's hard vocal approach is very much in place on all tracks – raw but not careless, with great ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stax, Early 70s. Very Good
A killer live set by Rufus Thomas – recorded right at the height of his funky comeback, before a very right-on crowd at PJ's Nightclub in LA! Rufus was always a great entertainer, and he really opens up in this live setting – doing some nice versions of "Do The Funky Chicken" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mestizo
A&M, 1974. Near Mint-
A really wonderful album – a warm bit of brown-eyed soul from the hip LA scene of the early 70s! Daniel Valdez has a style that's part Jose Feliciano, part Tim Buckley – and since we love both of those artists a lot, you can imagine how much we like this record! He's got Jose's sweet ...
