LP, Vinyl record album

4.90 5

Great small combo work from Gene Krupa – one of his excellent sides for Verve during the 50s! Players here include the great Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor, Charlie Shavers on trumpet, and Bill Harris on trombone – and rhythm is from Teddy Wilson on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Krupa on drums – a swinging little unit that keeps plenty of room for warm solo lines in the set! Titles include "Who's Rhythm", "Second Helping Blues", "Bloozy Woozy", "Meddle My Minor", and "Windy". (Heavy black label Clef pressing, with trumpeter logo and deep groove. Cover has light wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Recital By Oscar Peterson
Clef, 1952/1954. Good+
A great early example of the genius of mixing guitar with the piano of Oscar Peterson – a move that might have been inspired by the success of Ahmad Jamal, but which works equally well for Peterson's sound on the keys! The tracks here feature either Herb Ellis or Irving Ashby on guitar ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clef, Early 50s. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
To our knowledge, this is the only 2LP set issued under the JATP series – and it's a nicely laid out batch of tracks that actually also features some discreet work by smaller combos, in addition to the usual jam session format. Disc one features "The Blues" – played by a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Right On Brother

A fantastic album of funky jazz guitar – by one of the best players in the genre! Jimmy Giuffre Clarinet
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good-
Beautiful work from Jimmy Giuffre – and a key album in the development of his spare sound of the late 50s! The record features Jimmy on clarinet – as you'd guess by the title – but this is no hokey set of Benny Goodman or Buddy DeFranco-type tunes. Instead, Giuffre's using the ... LP, Vinyl record album

World Pacific, Mid 60s. Very Good+
Billy Larkin plays soul jazz instrumentals with The Delgates, and the group's joined by singer Ralph Black on a number of cuts. Black's style is ok, but the group's strong point is still their funky jazzy material. This LP sports a few originals – like "Way Cross Town" and "He ... LP, Vinyl record album

Key proof that Deodato kept on making great records after leaving CTI Records – and in a way, the kind of set that allowed him a bit more freedom to grow than some of his contemporaries!
