Very righteous material from Gary Bartz – and one of his classic NTU Troop albums, with Andy Bey on vocals and electric piano, and the great Stafford James playing some mighty heavy bass! The tracks are nice and long, with a very soulful sound that mixes freer spiritual playing with a good sense for a groove. Includes an excellent remake of the Stevie Wonder/Syreeta cut "Black Maybe", plus "Bertha Baptist", "Africans Unite", and a great version of "I Wanna Be Where You Are".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

A rare treat by Gary Bartz – and very different than most of his other work! The album's a small group session – with Charles Mims on piano, Curtis Robertson on bass, and Howard King on drums – recorded with the feel of a looser soul jazz set on Black Jazz or Strata East. Mims' ... LP, Vinyl record album
For The Good Times
Prestige, 1973. New Copy (reissue)
One of Rusty Bryant's last albums for Prestige – recorded in that more-electric mode that graced the label's albums of the year 1973 – but in a style that's still pretty darn nice! The group's still a small combo – with Rusy on tenor and alto, plus with Hank Jones on electric ... LP, Vinyl record album

A richly soulful album from tenor giant Rusty Bryant – and a set that mixes his older Prestige Records mode with the larger electric styles of the CTI generation! A fantastic spooky bit of wild keyboard jazz from Ra! Night Of The Purple Moon was recorded in 1972 and Ra playing two different moogs, and his classic rocksichord – likely put to its most mind alteringly great use on this LP! John Gilmore, surprisingly enough, plays percussion, except on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Patrice Rushen's second album – and a very sweet batch of keyboard funk! The record has Patrice working in a groove that's almost like that of Herbie Hancock at the time – using lots of electric piano, clavinet, and synth to craft some mighty fine jazz funk grooves. The group's a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)
Killer funkiness from Boogaloo Joe Jones! Grover Washington Jr makes an incredible appearance here – sounding much harder and heavier than on some of his Kudu recordings – more of a gritty soul jazz player, working beautifully alongside the sharp guitar of Boogaloo Joe Jones, and the ... One of the few small group recordings ever cut by pianist Francy Boland – and a set that cooks every bit as much as his work with the larger Clarke Boland Big Band on MPS!
