CD (Item 545678) Ogun (UK), 1990/1991 — Condition: New Copy
Brilliant recordings from drummer Louis Moholo – done at a time when he was one of the few surviving members of the legendary Blue Notes – working here with his Viva La Black combo, in a sound that has a similar mix of South African roots and European avant modes! The material's from the mid 90s, and is incredibly strong – a great reminder that in the right corners of the UK scene, there was still some plenty righteous jazz going down – rich in spirit and soul, and let loose with a great sense of freedom on the solos! In addition to Moholo's percussion, the group also features Sean Bergin on tenor and flute, Steve Williamson on tenor and alto, Claude Deppa on trumpet and flugelhorn, Frank Douglas on guitar, Paul Rogers on bass, and Thebe Lipere on percussion – and although the music was recorded in the studio, it definitely has the energy of a freewheeling live performance. Titles include "Plastic Bag", "Visions", "Dudu Pukwana", "Kwa Langa Kumandi", "Wathinta Amadoda", and "For The Blue Notes". (g major.) © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
