CD (Item 41675) Spotlite (UK), 1974 — Condition: New Copy
One of the greatest 70s records by British sax genius Don Rendell – working here with his "Five" group that includes Barbara Thompson on flute, tenor, and sproano sax – alongside Rendell's own excellent work on the same horns, plus a bit of clarinet as well! There's a slight touch of the exotic to the record – one that you'd hardly expect from Rendell's earliest years, but which is a nice extension of his Space Walk album – a mix of easy modal, straight hardbop, and some more far-reaching numbers that show a definite post-Coltrane influence. But unlike some of Rendell's other work from the decade, the proceedings are all quite tight, with no overindulgence, and a strong commitment to swing on most of the work – a groove that really makes the album cook – thanks to help from Peter Lemer on piano, Steve Cook on bass, and Laurie Allan on drums. Titles include "The Wensleydale Suite", "Well, Make It Up", "Sands Of Time", "Out Of My Window", and "Penta-gone".
