CD (Item 480543) Inner City, 1966 — Condition: New Copy
The last work ever recorded by pianist Elmo Hope – one of the most brilliant modernist talents of his generation, right up there with Monk and Herbie Nichols for sheer inventiveness! The material here shows Hope still burning brightly in the last years of his life – hitting the keys of the piano with a freely creative style that's really wonderful – angular and modern, but always filled with a sense of warmth – quite different than any of his predecessors, and a good deal of most future players to come as well! The material was recorded in 1966 for the Festival label – and features Hope working with a trio that includes John Orr on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums, with some occasional guest work on drums by Philly Joe Jones on drums on a few tracks – all spare trio sides, but pretty darn wonderful nonetheless. Titles on this second volume include "Elmos Blues", "Stellations", "I Love You", "Night In Tunisia", and "Bertha My Dear" – and tracks are even longer and more drawn-out than on volume one! © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
