An unusual little record – a set that's a bit "fake" in its pedigree, but which still comes across with some wonderfully vivid results! Fred Kaz is a Chicago pianist, but he works here on a set of original compositions based on his readings on Near Eastern cultures – dubbed by Fred as "Turkish experiments" in the liner notes – and a compelling blend of Eastern modes and modern jazz piano – maybe not as all-out as later experiments of the type on MPS/Saba, but still pretty darn great! The group's a trio – with Victor Sproles on bass and Roger Wanderscheid on drums – and titles include "Sand", "Ameer", "Salaam", "Turkish Blues", "Fez", "Muezzin", and "Tassel".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

A sweet set of solo fusion from drummer Danny Gottlieb – formerly with Pat Metheny's group – and feel that's definitely in character with some of Methany's work from the period. Gottlieb is working here in the company of guitarist John Abercrombie and a number of cuts, and Joe Satriani ... CD

A classic early set from The Yellowjackets – just the kind of record that made them a mainstream fusion leader in the 80s! The style here takes off from 70s electric jazz with a bit more polish – not really smooth jazz, but a tight fusion of keyboards and guitars that are nicely ... CD

A wonderful 70s set from Herbie Mann – and one that features some heavy help from P&P maestro Patrick Adams! The album's more of an Adams-directed affair than the usual Herbie set – as Adams produced and arranged all the tracks, and really takes Mann in the direction of a hip late ... CD
