Sweet smooth and funky work from Eddie Henderson – a nice move from his more righteous work of the mid 70s, into an R&B-tinged sound that would take him far in years to come! The sound is surprisingly great, and still pretty darn righteous – thanks to some great production by Skip Drinkwater – working with Eddie in the same funky fusion mode as on his records with Bobbi Humphrey from the same time. There's a warm compressed groove to the session that's really great – and Eddie's working with a top-shelf batch of players that include Patrice Rushen, Paul Jackson, Julian Priester, and George Cables. Titles include "Movin On", "Say You Will", "Source", "Open Eyes", and "Beyond Forever". (Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has wear, some staining, and a bit of seam splitting.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Capitol, 1960s. Very Good+ Gatefold
A nice collection of some of Cannon's bigger numbers for Capitol in the 60s – most of them longer tracks, some of them recorded live, with a bit of production help from David Axelrod! The grooves are firmly in place – not as tripped out and funky as later years, but a good updating of ... LP, Vinyl record album

After Dark
Capitol, 1955. Very Good
An excellent album by Marian McPartland – a bit "high concept", but that's what makes it work! Marian's usually sleepy trio is augmented by cello and harp – and instead of turning the record into a snooze fest, the added strings actually give it a slightly darker quality than ... Cool & Quiet (10 inch LP)
Capitol, Late 40s. Good+
A great "birth of the cool" album from Capitol – a 10" record that brings together some key recordings from that pivotal jazz year of 1949! Titles include "Imagination" by a large group with Bill Harris in the lead on trombone; "Wow", "Marionette" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Of The Bible
Capitol, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Prime material from Cannonball and David Axelrod – and despite the biblical leanings of the title, the record is pretty darn funky! As they did for the Zodiac, Cannonball and Adderley take a trip through a host of cultural milestones – stopping along the way to turn each one into a new ... LP, Vinyl record album

Here & Now
Capitol, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A bit mellower than usual for George – but very nice! George's quintet is backed by a larger orchestra – the usual mixture of vibes, piano, guitar, and percussion supported by a larger set of strings, which gives the record a lightly drifting kind of feel. There's not as many Latin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Society (UK), 1963. Very Good+
An obscure larger format album from the great John Dankworth – kind of an extension of his 60s work in both jazz and soundtrack formats! The performance features Dankworth and Pete King on alto, Art Ellefson on tenor, Kennh Wheeler and Dickie Hawdon on trumpet, Tony Russell on trombone, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blowin' The Blues Away
Blue Note, 1959. Very Good-
A killer session from Horace's famous quintet that included Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Gene Taylor, and Louis Hayes – and one of the group's earliest recordings for Blue Note. The band had a unique mix of rootsy soul jazz playing and more exotic approaches to arranging, and they managed to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Muse, 1982. Very Good+
One of the great later sides that Bill Barron cut for Muse. The amazing tenor player's a big more restrained than in his 60's work with Ted Curson, but his sound is excellent, and he leads the group with all the finesse of a master. Kenny Barron, Jimmy Owens, Buster Williams, and Ed Blackwell ... LP, Vinyl record album

Birth Of A Notion
Sessom, 1985. Near Mint-
Chicago reed player Ed Wilkerson (also known as the leader of 8 Bold Souls, and a member of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble) formed this group in the 80's as sort of a mixed large band of Chicago avant garde players, but with more of a focus on tighter swingin' sounds. This, their only LP, includes ... LP, Vinyl record album
