Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty

LP, Vinyl record album

Tripped-out funk from Johnny – very much in his "I Got To Ta Ta Ya Baby" mode, with the guitar skipping around keyboards in a mellow Bay Area kind of way! Johnny's gone way way past his bluesy roots here – into a sublime blend of soul and funk that's all crafted with just the right amount of lightly spacey touches. The Watson vocals are totally on the money throughout – sliding into the mix in that seductive way that often has Johnny singing beautifully alongside his guitar. Titles include "It's All About The Dollar Bill", "Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty", "Barn Door", "Love That Will Not Die", 'I'm Gonna Get You Baby", "Give Me My Love", and "It's A Damn Shame". (Cover has light wear and a bit of marker in one corner.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Mainstream, 1973. Very Good+
A killer album of Afro Funk – with a very unusual origin! In the wake of Manu Dibango's big hit (and some kind of failure to register the copyright), many many versions of "Soul Makossa" were recorded and released, some good, some bad. This album is a good example of that ... LP, Vinyl record album

An obscure little funky group from Detroit, one with a tight ensemble sound that's very much in the Earth Wind & Fire mode – complete with a really great horn section, plenty of bass-heavy grooves a the bottom, and a relatively spiritual feel that comes through strongly on the best tracks! ... Polydor, 1971. Very Good-
James Brown really opens up on this early 70s classic – really showing the world the amazing groove he was crafting with his band – who were let loose to jam in the studio, spinning out some really long grooves – which were then cut down to make this sweet little record! Round 2
Avco, 1972. Very Good-
Landmark harmony soul from The Stylistics – a set that's every bit as wonderful as their debut, with the kind of sweet, soulful sound that got played over and over and over and over again back in the day! The album's got a subtle sort of power, though – one that lies not only in its ... LP, Vinyl record album
