Guantanamera (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus mono mix)
CD (Item 604965) A&M (Japan), 1967 — Condition: New Copy
The landmark first album from The Sandpipers – a set that not only sent big ripples through 60s pop in general, but which also really transformed the sound of male harmony groups at the time! The trio have a great way of mixing together jazz harmonies learned in the generation of the Four Freshmen and The Hi-Los with some of the folksy modes used by 60s groups of the folk revival – yet also manage their own weird dark space too, partly through the use of some slight Latin and Spanish touches that resonate perfectly with the A&M Records aesthetic of the time! The approach is heard famously in their sublime reading of "Guantanamera" – but the whole album is wonderful, and other tracks include "La Mer", "Things We Said Today", "Strangers In The Night", "What Makes You Dream, Pretty Girl?", and a sublime vocal rendition of "Cast Your Fate To The Wind". Arrangements by Mort Garson and Nick DeCaro, too! CD features a full bonus mono mix of the album too! (SHMCD pressing.) © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
