Better than you might think – and a nice set of flute-oriented hardbop that has Herbie Mann playing next to Belgian flautist Bobby Jaspar! The pair of them trade off lines in a couple of long tracks that have that Prestige "blowin' session" feel to them, with lots of spare rhythm playing in the back that lets the soloists wander amply in the front – and Jaspar takes over on main flute duties on some other tracks too. Other players include Tommy Flanagan, Joe Puma, Eddie Costa, and Doug Watkins – and tracks include "Bo Do", "Solacium", "Flute Bass Blues", and "Flute Bob". Sultry Serenade
Riverside, 1957. Very Good-
An early record by Herbie Mann, and one that offers a nice treat – bass clarinet! Although Herbie made his fame in the 60s with his Latiny flute playing, he was also a darn good bass clarinetist, and he plays both instruments on this rare early session from 1957. The bass clarinet doesn't ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of Ammons' classic blowing sessions for Prestige, with an all-star lineup that includes Art Farmer, Jackie McLean, Mal Waldron, and Kenny Burrell. The title kind of says it all, so let us just tell you that the album was recorded in 1969, during one of the most fruitful periods of Byard's career, when he was opening up tremendously as a musician, with confidence and freedom that he rarely expressed at any other point in his career. Memphis Jackson
Impulse, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
One of the grooviest albums ever from the legendary Milt Jackson – an upbeat, almost funky set of soul jazz tracks – played with some great grooves on the bottom!
