Songs For A French Lady
LP (Item 602728) Andrew's Music, 1974 — Condition: New Copy
A great cooker from reedman Andrew White – a bit different than some of his other records, but in a nice way! Side one has tunes that are a bit shorter and sweeter than usual – showing yet another side of White's never-ending talents – a way of handling both tenor and alto in a warmly soulful mode, with help from Kevin Toney on piano, Steve Novosel on bass, and Keith Killgo on drums. The side begins with the excellent groover "Bosa Nova" (sic)", then moves through other lady-inspired numbers "Mes Hommes (My Women)", "Guele De Nuit", and "L'Amoreuse" – to end on a firey version of Coltrane's "Moment's Notice". Side two is even more compelling – with White overdubbed, playing a weird "Concerto for Sixteen Instruments" – on oboe, clarinet, alto, tenor, flute, and English horn!
