Slim Moore & The Mar-Kays — Introducing Slim Moore & The Mar-Kays ... CD 13.99

One of the best new funk albums we've heard in years – and one that really does an amazing job of putting equal emphasis on intrumentation and deep soul vocals! Slim Moore comes across like some lost singer from the early 70s funky 45 generation – gritty and upfront, with a quality that's instantly infectious – almost like Syl Johnson during his Twinight years! Then the Mar-Kays play with this depth that's equally wonderful – mixing funky licks with more complicated soul touches – some of the vibes we've been getting from the Daptone scene in recent years – slower grooves mixed with faster ones, touches of hip instrumentation, like vibes – all wrapped up in a production style that really recalls the best days of indie soul. The whole thing's wonderful – a record we'd put right up there with Lee Fields' My World, or the Charles Bradley full-length – and a set we'll be digging for years! Titles include "How Long", "Cityscape", "Slim's Theme", "Reachin Higher", "Mar-Kays Theme", "Cool Breeze", and Help Me Now".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the best new soul records we've heard in years – a tremendous accomplishment for the mighty Lee Fields, and a set that's quite different than any of his other work! Daptone, 2002. New Copy
The greatest album to date from Sugarman 3 – one of the funkiest combos of the past 50 years! The group's organ/sax sound has never sounded so great – and it's pumped up even further here from some added guest instrumentation, including drums from Bernard Purdie, plus vocals on a ... Gritty, powerful raw soul from Charles Bradley – the full length debut from the 62-year-old Brooklyn singer – backed perfectly by The Menahan Street Band! It's incredible, a record that sounds just as rawly emotional and impeccably soulful in 2011 as it would have in 1971 – much ... LP, Vinyl record album
It's Just Begun
RCA, 1972. New Copy (reissue)
Wickedly fuzzy funk! Jimmy Castor recorded in a lot of different styles during the 70s – but the one he used on this album is still his best! The record's a non-stop guitar-heavy batch of classic funk tracks – and it features the storming break track "It's Just Begun", the ... LP, Vinyl record album

And give a party they do – a really rocking, raw soul party that goes way past any teeny-bopper sort of associations with the "twist" – into a realm that may well make the album The Shirelles greatest record ever! A pretty great set of unreleased tracks by Michael Fennelly – a name that might be instantly familiar, but he's a vital figure in late 60s sunshine rock and 70s power pop – thanks to his work in Curt Boettcher's Millennium and Fennelly's later group Crabby Appleton!
