One of Barney Kessel's greatest albums ever – a rare Italian-only session that has a sparkly Brazilian groove! The record was recorded in Rome in 1967, and it's got Kessel's guitar fronting a combo with organ and some very tight percussion, all dancing around in a fast samba mode that's different from virtually anything else he ever recorded. There's loads of original tracks on the set – like "Freeway", "Lison", "BJ's Samba", and "On the Riviera" – and the whole thing has a breezy dancing feel that's really wonderful! Fantasy, 1974. Near Mint-
We have to admit we've always been somewhat dismissive of Merl Saunders 70s records, perhaps because of the hippy association we have with these bay area recordings. Verve, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sessions like this are proof that Jimmy was one of the most fantastic organ players ever – as his work with large arrangements (supplied here by Claus Ogerman) always seems to groove better than his work with small combos. His sound is impeccable, and he soars ahead of the rest of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Workin' Out!
Prestige, 1965. Very Good-
A killer album of soul jazz tracks that pairs together two of Prestige's best players! The firey Bobby Timmons is at the height of his career here – cutting long drawn-out piano grooves that are among some of the best of his young years. Lytle's always a killer – and his funky vibes ... LP, Vinyl record album
