One of Barney Kessel's greatest albums ever – a rare Italian-only session that has a sparkly Brazilian groove! The record was recorded in Rome in 1967, and it's got Kessel's guitar fronting a combo with organ and some very tight percussion, all dancing around in a fast samba mode that's different from virtually anything else he ever recorded. There's loads of original tracks on the set – like "Freeway", "Lison", "BJ's Samba", and "On the Riviera" – and the whole thing has a breezy dancing feel that's really wonderful! (Cover has light wear and a small cutout mark.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Contemporary, 1958. Very Good+
An odd choice for material, but a surprisingly nice record – and just the kind of session needed to break Barney Kessel out of some of his too-familiar trio modes of the 50s! The record here features jazz takes on tunes from the opera Carmen – in case you didn't figure that out from ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hair Is Beautiful
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good+
A sweet sweet groover from Barney Kessel – his own hip take on the soundtrack for Hair – all those wonderful songs originally penned by the great Galt MacDermot! Barney's got an extra-trippy feel on some of the best cuts – a wider sound on his guitar, which rings out nicely ... LP, Vinyl record album

Contemporary, 1960. Near Mint-
A tight little set from Barney – recorded in 1960 at a back room studio at Contemporary with a small live audience! Kessel and his guitar are joined by Marvin Jenkins on piano and flute, Gary Peacock on bass and Ron Lundberg on drums – and the feel is easily swinging, in that mode that ... LP, Vinyl record album

After The Riot At Newport
RCA, 1960. Very Good
It's a little known fact that Nashville, although best remembered as a center of country music, has also given the world some pretty great jazz players – some of whom easily skirt the line between jazz and country studio work. This set's a great summation of that tradition – featuring ... LP, Vinyl record album

Goodies
RCA, 1965. Sealed
One of the lesser-known JJ Johnson albums of the mid 60s – and nice little session that's done with a fresh sort of style! The album's got JJ playing mostly with larger arrangements – penned by Dick Hyman, Slide Hampton, and Billy Byaers – in modes that range from upbeat, mod, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blackjack
Blue Note, 1967. Very Good
An incredible album from Donald Byrd – hard, funky, and with more of an edge than most of his other Blue Note work! The sound on the album's incredibly sinister – really concerned with downward chord turns in moody rhythms – played with a real sense of soul by a frontline that ... LP, Vinyl record album
