A surprising turn towards the past for these two fusion heavyweights – a set that has both Joe Sample and David T Walker reprising a host of older R&B classics! The album was handled by the Crusaders' production team, and it's still got a few elements of that side of the spectrum – but the set is mostly stripped-down and spontaneous, with an attempted rootsy feel overall – at least from the perspective of the early 80s jazz funk mainstream. The main focus is on Sample's keyboards and Walker's guitar – and there's a bit of horns mixed in with the tunes as well, but never too much. Titles include "Honky Tonk", "After Hours", "Rockhouse", "Next Time U See Me", and "Hallelujah I Love Her So".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

One of the fantastic electric Cal Tjader sessions from the 70s – with that mixture of vibes and electric piano that made his work of the time take on an even funkier sound than before! A great slice from Jackie McLean's rare unissued 60s sessions for Blue Note – a rollingly soulful session that stands in stark contrast to some of his more modern sides of the time! The set's got Jackie working with a group that includes Lee Morgan on trumpet and Harold Mabern on piano ... LP, Vinyl record album
Laura Lee
Hot Wax, 1972. Near Mint-
A standout set from the great Laura Lee – a deep soul singer with power to rival the greatness of Aretha Franklin, but one who's also got a funkier punch to her music too! The album's a great blend of late 60s female southern and tight 70s bad sister funk – a style that's a bit like ... LP, Vinyl record album
