A surprising turn towards the past for these two fusion heavyweights – a set that has both Joe Sample and David T Walker reprising a host of older R&B classics! The album was handled by the Crusaders' production team, and it's still got a few elements of that side of the spectrum – but the set is mostly stripped-down and spontaneous, with an attempted rootsy feel overall – at least from the perspective of the early 80s jazz funk mainstream. The main focus is on Sample's keyboards and Walker's guitar – and there's a bit of horns mixed in with the tunes as well, but never too much. Titles include "Honky Tonk", "After Hours", "Rockhouse", "Next Time U See Me", and "Hallelujah I Love Her So".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Love Will Find A Way
Arista, 1978. Near Mint-
A beautiful little record by Pharoah Sanders – quite different than most of his other recordings of the 70s, and done in a smoothly jazzy mode that also features plenty of soul! Sanders did the set in collaboration with Norman Connors – and the style is in that same great mix of mellow ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mellow Madness
A&M, 1973. Very Good-
A really great, oft-overlooked album from the best period of Quincy Jones! This album is quite possibly Quincy's most farthest-reaching – as he works in an array of styles that really shows his growing genius in the studio – not just jazz and soundtrack modes, but more soul-based ones, ... Pressure Sensitive
Blue Note, 1975. Very Good+
Classic bit of 70's fusion, played by Ronnie on tenor and flute, and with a group that includes some excellent keyboard work by Joe Sample. The highlight of the record is the big sample cut "Tidal Wave", but it also includes the great groover "Always There", which was covered a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Laura Lee
Hot Wax, 1972. Very Good+
A standout set from the great Laura Lee – a deep soul singer with power to rival the greatness of Aretha Franklin, but one who's also got a funkier punch to her music too! The album's a great blend of late 60s female southern and tight 70s bad sister funk – a style that's a bit like ... LP, Vinyl record album
