Easy grooving magic from Paul Horn – a record that has his exotic flute work paired up with arrangements by Oliver Nelson – making for a session that's got a lot more punch than usual for Horn – in a mode that we like quite a lot! The flute's in the lead on all tracks, but the Nelson arrangements are equally striking – and filled with nice touches like Eastern instrumentation or 60s mod rhythms – really making for a lot of tight groovers that really differ from Horn's other work. The set features a few great originals – arranged by Horn with a feel that's even trippier than Nelson's work – and titles include "Acapulco Gold", "Paramahansa", "Guv Gubi", "Karen's World", "Girl", and "Eight Miles High". Columbia, 1969. Very Good+ 2 LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark ... House Of David
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+
One of David Newman's grooviest albums of the 60s – a stripped-down set that features a quartet with Hammond and guitar – all in a vibe that's a bit more relaxed than some of Newman's other sessions for Atlantic! There's a gritty edge to the record – with organ by the obscure ... LP, Vinyl record album

Black Jazz, 1971. Near Mint-
One of the few albums ever cut by reedman Rudolph Johnson – a hell of a saxophonist, and one with a great ability to combine the spiritual with the searing – a bit like Joe Farrell at his CTI best, but not as freewheeling – nicely focused, and a little bit funky in all the right ...
