Easy grooving magic from Paul Horn – a record that has his exotic flute work paired up with arrangements by Oliver Nelson – making for a session that's got a lot more punch than usual for Horn – in a mode that we like quite a lot! The flute's in the lead on all tracks, but the Nelson arrangements are equally striking – and filled with nice touches like Eastern instrumentation or 60s mod rhythms – really making for a lot of tight groovers that really differ from Horn's other work. The set features a few great originals – arranged by Horn with a feel that's even trippier than Nelson's work – and titles include "Acapulco Gold", "Paramahansa", "Guv Gubi", "Karen's World", "Girl", and "Eight Miles High". Bitches Brew
Columbia, 1969. Very Good+ 2 LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark ... Bossa Nova
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good
Very nice, very tight little bossa nova set by Eddie Harris from his early days at Vee Jay! The groove is very open, and Eddie's still at the stage where he can really cut the stuff. His solos ring out hard and cold above some great Lalo Schifrin arrangements, and Lalo also plays piano on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Spring Rain
Black Jazz, 1971. Near Mint-
One of the few albums ever cut by reedman Rudolph Johnson – a hell of a saxophonist, and one with a great ability to combine the spiritual with the searing – a bit like Joe Farrell at his CTI best, but not as freewheeling – nicely focused, and a little bit funky in all the right ...
