Symphonies In My Head

CD (Item 601759) Jazzland (Norway), 2012 — Condition: New Copy

Maybe the greatest album we've heard so far from Hakon Kornstad – all solo improvisations, but multi-layered in the recording process – with the result of the symphonies promised in the title! The sound isn't symphonic, but it's more like Hakon's leading a small combo made up of himself – on tenor and bass saxophone, flutes, sansula, flutonette, and even a slight bit of voice – all handled in ways that are far more soulful than before! Kornstad's saxes are especially nice – often spun out with this spiritual, searching quality that's really wonderful – an aspect of his music we've never heard this strongly before, and which holds us rapt throughout. There's a quality that almost reminds us of early 70s Impulse Records – especially the Marion Brown sessions from the time – and titles include "Mandal", "Plystre", "Flutter", "Pearl Fisher", "Damascus", and "Sansula".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
