Psychedelic Music Of India

CD (Item 466855) El (UK), Mid 50s — Condition: New Copy

Early international recordings made by these two masters of Indian music – not as "psychedelic" as you might guess from the title, but still pretty darn great! The first half of the CD features 50s sides by Ali Akbar Khan – oddly narrated with an introduction on each number by Yehudi Menuhin, then giving way to a much longer instrumental passage that features Khan's amazing work on sarod – a multi-stringed, lute-like instrument. Titles include "Rag Sindhu Bhairavi" and "Rag Pilu Baroowa". The second half of the CD features work by Ustad Vilayat Khan – possibly the second-best known sitar player in the world in the 60s after Ravi Shankhar, but one with a sound that was sometimes a bit more precise. The tracks by Vilayat Khan are all a bit shorter, and filled with amazing sitar work – eerie tones and notes that dance together beautifully in patterns that unfold slowly. Titles include "Raga Des", "Raga Pahadi", "Raga Shandrakauns Asthai", "Raga Bihag", and "Bhatiyali Dhun".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
