CD (Item 571235) Capitol/FTG, Early 80s — Condition: New Copy

A sublime double-header – both rare albums from Perry & Sanlin, together on one CD! First up is For Those Who Love – the first Capitol effort from Phil Perry & Kevin Sanlin – two excellent harmony soul singers who were part of the legendary Montclairs who recorded for Paula earlier in the 70s – and it's a slick batch of modern soul tracks produced with a nice jazzy tinge. Charles (ex-Independents) Jackson handled the album, as he did work for Natalie Cole on Capitol, and so much other great stuff for the label around this time – and the record sparkles with the best modern soul that was coming out on Capitol at the time. The duet style is a bit in the mode of The Valentine Brothers, with either singer taking the lead, and the other coming in on the choruses – and the album's very well handled throughout. Includes a great remake of "Can't Hide Love", plus "Since You (Came Into My Life)", "I'm So Glad There's You", "We Belong Together", and "It's Alright". We're The Winners features production by Richard Evans, and feels very much like work issued under his name in the late 70s – tight, grooving, and nicely funky – but also with a sophisticated edge that has some undercurrents of jazz in the mix, too. Keyboards are by Les McCann, who plays Fender Rhodes on the set – and the whole album has a cool and jazzy feel – with that great early 80s Capitol Rare style – mixing up smooth production, tight soul songwriting, and some nice instrumental elements under the vocals. Tracks include "We're the Winners", "Special to Me", "Shake Down", "Show Stopper", "Wait Till The Next Time", and "Just Like Magic".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
