A killer debut from Curtis Hairston – an overlooked 80s soul singer who should have made it big, given the strength of this set! The album's got a tight groove, but is never too commercial – a bit away from other Atlantic soul of the time, thanks to some solid studio help from Kae Williams of BB&Q Band, a group with whom Hairston had worked previously. Williams arranged and produced half the set – the rest was done by Greg Radford – and the album mixes Hairston's well-crafted vocals with a mixture of upbeat rhythms and mellower tunes, the latter of which we like the best. Titles include "You're My Shining Star", "Chillin Out", "All We Have Is Love", "Take Charge", "The Morning After", and "Hold On (For Me)". (Cover has a promo stamp, cutout notch & factory sticker.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Oh Girl
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good-
Wicked electric funk from Young Holt Unlimited – and a real departure from the sound of their 60s albums, and a step into a groove that's very 70s-styled overall! Cheryl Lynn
Columbia, 1978. Very Good
Massive work from the great Cheryl Lynn – and a key bridge between late 70s disco and the newer grooves of the 80s club scene! The album's a mix of midtempo groovers with a few mellower tracks – and it's got a tight, slightly jazzy sound that was very fresh at the time, and which still ... LP, Vinyl record album

Black Heat
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good
A searing debut from Black Heat – one of the best funk acts to record for Atlantic during the 70s, and a tight little group with a sound that's a mixture of New Orleans funk and New York heavy! The album's got a bit of vocals – figuring in on about half the tracks – but the main ... LP, Vinyl record album
