A killer debut from Curtis Hairston – an overlooked 80s soul singer who should have made it big, given the strength of this set! The album's got a tight groove, but is never too commercial – a bit away from other Atlantic soul of the time, thanks to some solid studio help from Kae Williams of BB&Q Band, a group with whom Hairston had worked previously. Williams arranged and produced half the set – the rest was done by Greg Radford – and the album mixes Hairston's well-crafted vocals with a mixture of upbeat rhythms and mellower tunes, the latter of which we like the best. Titles include "You're My Shining Star", "Chillin Out", "All We Have Is Love", "Take Charge", "The Morning After", and "Hold On (For Me)". Mercury, 1978. Good+
Excellent work from this smooth Chicago vocal group! The album may well be the best the group ever recorded – and it features some stellar ballad work produced with a nice spacey tone, almost in a Rose Royce mellow mode – by Jerry Butler's Fountain Productions team and by Clarence ... Philadelphia International, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
An interesting move for Don Covay – a singer who started out as a fairly straightforward soul performer, then got a bit bluesier in the early 70s, then shifted back to a more pop-oriented groove. This one's got Don working with arrangements by Bobby Martin and Dexter Wansel that still keep ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cheryl Lynn
Columbia, 1978. Very Good
Massive work from the great Cheryl Lynn – and a key bridge between late 70s disco and the newer grooves of the 80s club scene! The album's a mix of midtempo groovers with a few mellower tracks – and it's got a tight, slightly jazzy sound that was very fresh at the time, and which still ... LP, Vinyl record album
