Pickup On South Street/Dangerous Crossing
CD (Item 597975) 20th Century/Intrada, 1953 — Condition: New Copy
Two different film scores – but both conducted by Lionel Newman with a very similar feel! Dangerous Crossing was composed by Alfred Newman and Sol Kaplan, but it's Lionel who really brings it its depth – that mix of rich strings and more isolated passages that made the Newman trademark one of the key evolutions in film scoring during the 50s – more sonic sensitivity, carried best through the woodwinds – with a feel that's very vivid, yet never overdone. Titles include "The Cabin", "Ruth", "Night Terror", "The Fog", and "Grateful". Next is Leigh Harline's rich score for Pickup On South Street – one of the greatest noirs ever made – and with a soundtrack that has this dynamic, urban sort of feel – almost that city-symphony mode that others were fleshing out into serious works on their own – but which makes the music a really breathtaking component of the film! Newman's orchestrations are wonderful – and titles include "Skip McCoy", "South Street", "Candy & Skip", and "Muffin". (Limited edition of 1200 copies.) © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
