Coming Out Swinging
CD (Item 476342) Muse, 1990 -- Condition: New Copy
Altoist Lewis Keel has a great combo for this date -- a group with Harold Mabern on piano and Jimmy Ponder on guitar -- both of whom bring a lot to the set! Keel's alto is blown straight and strong -- almost with the force of a tenor in parts, stretching out with soulful depth that really fits the spirit of the session. The rhythms fit this mode nicely too -- bass from Jamil Nasser, drums from Leroy Williams, and a bit of added percussion from Buzz Hollie on a few numbers -- used in rollicking ways that almost remind us of early 60s Lou Donaldson sets for Blue Note. Other numbers without the percussion are even more dynamic, though -- and stretch out with some of the best positive energy you'd hear in the Muse Records scene of the time. Titles include "Quiet Nights", "Love For Sale", "Blues Walk", "Everything Happens To Me", and "Lover Come Back To Me". © 1996-2010, Dusty Groove America, Inc. | |||||
