Romeo & Juliet – A Theme For Lovers/Music Around The World – For Lovers Only

CD (Item 611663) Capitol/Vocalion (UK), 1966/1970 — Condition: New Copy

Two later Jackie Gleason albums – both pretty darn obscure! Romeo & Juliet is quite late in Jackie's career – a sweet 1970 session that's filled with plenty of mature erotic overtones – yet still mixed with that classic Gleason blend of strings and nicely isolated instrumentation! There's an oddly dark quality to the record – and titles include "Embassy Waltz", "Beverly", "Didn't We", "Yesterday When I Was Young", "Romeo & Juliet", and "This Guy's In Love With You". Music Around The World follows a similar theme for lots of easy albums at the time – in that it features tunes that often have some far-flung locale in the title or lyrics. Yet here, in Gleason's hands, the tunes are something else altogether – very mellow, very moody instrumentals that are heavy in strings, with just some slight 60s elements drifting over the slow-moving rhythms. Titles include "Swedish Rhapsody", "London By Night", "Brazil", "On A Slow Boat To China", and "I Love Paris".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
