Messed up funky soul from the Chicago scene – a beautiful package of rare singles from Little Ed & The Soundmasters! The style here is a bit hard to describe – as Ed and crew were schooled in blues, but brought up during the 60s soul underground – and clearly managed to pick up plenty of trippier elements from their generation as well! There must have been some heavy smoke in the studio when these grooves were recorded – because they've got plenty of cool effects on the guitars, and a weird echoey quality in lots of the production – pretty amazing stuff that's unlike most of the funk we've heard from the time. As usual, Numero have done a wonderful job with the whole thing – bringing together 6 rare tracks on 3 funky 45s – complete with a lovely box, and a detailed 7" booklet too. One track features Johnny Dollar – and titles include "Your Love Has Got Me", "Struggling For Survival", "It's A Dream", "The Ghetto Grind", and "Petite Soul".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Numero, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)
The bump here is a gentle one – a cool slow funk start to a track that turns out to be just the kind of mellow harmony number we love so much! The flipside's equally great – and both cuts have a feel that reminds us of those east coast groups who could be hard and sweet at the same ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Hurts So Bad/I Think Of You
Pro 7/Numero, New Copy
A funky funky version of "Hurts So Bad" – one that still carries all the familiar lyric of the tune, but which begins with this totally great intro that sets up a mad groove peppered with hard piano lines and guitar! Rare late 70s Latin soul from Jade! "The Siesta Is Over" is a killer mix of styles – anchored strongly by funk, thanks of the limber bass line, JBs-inspired horns, raw drums and organ – but it's got a sunny vibe, too, thanks the groovy male and female harmony vocals. The ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Not a cover of the Afrika Bambaataa classic of the same name – although the cut does borrow the chorus for its own – and instead some mighty fresh work from Fatnice, set to some crackling cosmic beats! Our favorite is the stripped-down "windy city mix", which has a brasness ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Lee Fields takes on a great tune by JJ Cale – and serves the whole thing up in a deep soul vibe that's a nice change from usual – almost a country soul sort of vibe, with a different late 60s mode than some of Lee's other work! "Number One" steps ahead in a sweet blend of Hammond organ lines and nicely snapping rhythms – a groove that's maybe a more kicked-up version of early Meters at their best – as the bassline bounces quickly and adds a bit of a go-go soul vibe to the tune! "Bikes" is ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
