Incredible stuff – really really wonderful, and jam-packed with rare material that's never been released before! First off, you get the original Let's Get It On LP – an amazing record that stunned the world almost as much as Marvin's previous effort, What's Going On. Like that one, this album's an amazingly unified batch of tracks – with a visionary message about sex and love that is as honest and bracing as the politics and social commentary of his previous record. That set features 8 tracks on the CD – slow jam classics like "You Sure Love To Ball", "Distant Lover", and "Let's Get It On" – plus "Come Get To This", "Just to Keep You Satisfied", and "If I Should Die Tonight". After that, the set features 9 "session" tracks that show how Marvin built the album – plus some amazing funky numbers that never got issued properly. After that, there's 10 demos and alternate mixes – including versions of some of the tracks that will really surprise you. Then, after all that, there's another to tracks called "working the groove", which show Marvin working with Hal Davis, Willie Hutch, and others – to craft slow funky tunes that will blow your mind! All told, there's an additional 29 tracks added to the original album – with many many gems that are as great as that one. Titles include "The World Is Rated X", "Where Are We Going?", "You're The Man", "Symphony", "Cakes", "My Love Is Growing", "Song #3", "I Love You Secretly", "Running From Love", "Mandota", "You Are That Special One", and "We Can Make It Baby". Mary J Blige broke through well over a decade ago, but Breakthrough is an apt title for her eighth album – as it not only busts up the morass of mid 00s urban radio fodder – it also breaks through MJB's own creative doldrums – adding up her best work in years! It's certainly not ... CD
