Fairly funky set of tracks in which Klemmer plays electric and acoustic tenor, and in which he's accompanied by LA studio jazz talents like Harvey Mason, Wilton Felder, and Victor Feldman. Sounds a bit like some of the Eddie Harris Varitone albums from the time, with a rolling funky groove. Cuts include "Fresh Feathers", "Uhmmm! It Feels Good", "Wizards Revenge", "Music For People", and "Stinger".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Finesse
Elektra, 1983. Very Good+
A smooth set from reedman John Klemmer, but a pretty darn soulful one too – and a great illustration of the way that Klemmer could still hold onto his roots a lot more strongly than some of his contemporaries! The backings are gentle and fusiony – often with some great keyboard work ... LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent work by Klemmer – filled with the kind of fire and emotion that you don't get on many of his other records! The set was recorded live at two different venues – and it's a choppy slightly-funky batch of modal soul jazz tunes, with an approach that makes it feel like a lost ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pettiford's second album of big band tracks for ABC during the 50s – a more open-ended set than the previous one, with modernist touches that really make the set sparkle nicely. Part of these are due to Gigi Gryce, who plays alto on the record, and probably had a bit of a hand in ... LP, Vinyl record album

A pretty compelling album of east coast chamber jazz – in a mode that's similar to some of the Jazz Workshop titles by Hal McKusick and other players on RCA. The groups are led by Tom Stewart, who plays a very interesting instrument – a "tenor horn", which seems to be ... LP, Vinyl record album

A great overview of 4 key modern guitar players of the 50s – Jimmy Raney, Dick Garcia, Joe Puma, and Chuck Wayne – all presented here in tracks that may well be exclusive to this release. (We know that Raney recorded an album or two for ABC, but haven't seen any from Wayne, Puma, or ... LP, Vinyl record album

A complicated suite of tunes performed with Mulligan and Brookmeyer in the lead – and some occasional solos by Sunkel on cornet! The overall feel steps strongly from both Mulligan and Brookmeyer's styles of the mid 50s – tightly arranged, but with ample enough room for solo expression ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Lockjaw Davis swings way out here – working in that cool cooking mode from the 50s, with organist Shirley Scott a very important partner on the date!
