That's a pretty savage image on the cover of this one – and the music's definitely got a spirit to match! This early 60s score by Riz Ortolani is one of the more dramatic ones we've heard from the blood and sandals generation – put together with orchestrations that rage strongly right at the start, and only step back for some more playful moments once things get going. Some of the lighter tracks make great use of creative woodwinds and a bit of strings – and throughout the whole soundtrack, there's a great sonic sensibility – really moving past simple use of instruments, and often creating these rich bursts of sound that really hold us rapt.
