Don Rendell with the Joe Palin Trio Live At The Avgarde Gallery Manchester
CD (Item 389745) Spotlite (UK), 1973 — Condition: New Copy
Extremely strong work from British saxophonist Don Rendell – one of his best albums of the 70s, and a keen mix of the direct approach of earlier years, with some of the newer freedoms of his later work, without some of the overindulgence that could sometimes make him too sloppy! The tracks are long, with a wide-open modal groove – and the set features some very nice work by Rendell on tenor, soprano, and flute – each of which he plays with a slightly different voice, and a very strong edge – one that's almost a summation of all the great promise he brought to Brit jazz in the decade before, set loose on some post-Coltrane inspiration! Other players include Joe Palin on piano, Ian Taylor on bass, and Gordon Beckett on drums – plus a bit of guest trumpet from Pete Martin – and titles include "Antibes", "Summer Song", "On The Way", and "Euphrates". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
