Very very very groovy stuff by this masterful jazz vibist, recorded with a sort of late 60s swingin' feel – but still very much in the pocket and warm as a summer breeze! Lytle has a pretty remarkable way of playing the vibes with speed and energy, yet the overall feel still has kind of a relaxed West Coast vibe – a beautiful blend that rivals, if not beats, the sound of Cal Tjader on late 60s Verve! Jimmy Foster grooves along on organ, and the interplay with Lytle is key to the classic sound – but the whole group is great here – Major Holley on bass, Peppy Hinant on drums and Don Alias on conga, which brings in plenty of Latin kick. 6 of the 10 numbers are Lytle originals, including "Done It Again", "Sleepy Dozier", "Zote", "Jungle Child" and "Happy Preacher" – plus "If Ever I Should Leave You", "People" and "The Nearness Of You".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Man And A Woman
Solid State, 1967. Very Good Gatefold
It's like a dream come true! Francis Lai's soundtrack to A Man & A Woman is one of the greatest scores of the 60s – not to mention one of our all-time favorites – and the whole thing's give a nice jazzy finish here by the great Johnny Lytle, who serves up a tasty organ and vibes ... Pacific Jazz, 1956. Very Good
A classic from the west coast scene of the 50s – and not to be confused with other similar-titled Chico Hamilton albums at the time! This one sports an abstract painting on the cover, and was recorded in 1956 at the Forum Theater in Los Angeles – not live, but using the space as a very ... LP, Vinyl record album

Groovin' With Jug
Pacific Jazz, 1961. Very Good-
Groove and Jug wail away in this classic set of tenor/organ tracks recorded for Pacific Jazz in the early 60s. The backing is spare, with only Gene Edwards on guitar and Leroy Henderson on drums, and tracks include "Morris The Minor", "Good Vibrations", "Hey You, What's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pacific Jazz, 1958. Very Good
Quite an obscure little session – especially for the Pacific Jazz label, who mostly worked with some of the bigger names on the west coast scene! Pianist Freddie Gambrell is a player we only know from this one rare album – but it's quite a gem, and is cut in an unusual format that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lenny McBrowne & The Four Souls
Pacific Jazz, 1959. Very Good-
One of only two albums cut by the Four Souls group of drummer Lenny McBrowne – a really cooking combo that should have gotten greater exposure back in the day! The west coast group were clearly one of the hippest acts working on their scene at the time – as they've got a unique blend ... LP, Vinyl record album

Talk That Talk
Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the coolest records the Jazz Crusaders ever cut! The album's got their usual hard soul jazz quintet sound augmented by a bigger band – strangely uncredited on the record, but giving the group a lofty sound that pushes them into a whole new sound! The core style is still the LA soul ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pacific Jazz, 1963. Very Good+
Great early Crusaders stuff, and like many of their 60s sides, filled with memorable soul jazz that would become the template for a sound that would become the face of popular jazz for decades. The songs are almost all short, hard-cracking originals, and they've all got that tight LA groove that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hip Vibrations
Verve, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Groovy, YEAH! A very cool set of instrumental tracks, played by Cal on vibes, with sweet 60s pop jazz arrangements by Benny Golson. This is the kind of hip mix of styles that Verve did so well in the late 60s – and it's got a whirlwind of influences (Latin, bossa, soul jazz), all blending ... LP, Vinyl record album

Expansions
Flying Dutchman, 1975. Very Good- Gatefold
Quite possibly the most celebrated album ever from keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith – a groove-heavy classic that's burned up many a dancefloor in its day, yet also a record that features some great mellow moments as well! Bagpipe Blues
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good-
An amazing record, from an amazing player – the mighty Rufus Harley, heard here on tenor, flute, and soprano sax – as well as bagpipes, his "trademark" instrument!
