Dedicated To Dolphy
CD (Item 604635) Black Saint (Italy), 1994 — Condition: New Copy
A Dolphy record in sound and spirit – and one of the best Oliver Lake albums we've heard from this time! The tunes are either Eric Dolphy classics, or Lake originals with a very Eric-like approach – and they get great handling by a quintet that knows how to still swing heavily, even while reaching out on the solos – a balance that's very much like the early Dolphy albums for Prestige! Lake handles his horn with loads of deft lines that are no surprise, given his own legacy in jazz – but there's a definite sense of Dolphy angles and spirit going on too – supported by great work from Russell Gunn on trumpet, Charles Eubanks on piano, Belden Bullock on bass, and Cecil Brooks on drums – the last of whom brings some powerhouse energy that really keeps the album going. Titles include "Fire Waltz", "Hat & Beard", "Miss Ann", "Nov 80", "Page 4", "GW", and "245".
