Ed Thigpen In Copenhagen (Resource/Action-Re-Action)
CD (Item 419622) Stunt (Denmark), 1973/1974 — Condition: New Copy
An incredible set that brings together 2 rare early 70s albums cut by drummer Ed Thigpen in Copenhagen – both of them totally unique! Our real favorite here is the classic Action-Re-Action set – a razor-sharp, fusion-inspired session recorded with Mads Vinding on electric bass, Sabu Martinez on congas, and a really heavy groove throughout! Tracks are often hard, choppy, and tending towards the jazz break side of the spectrum – and other instrumentation includes trumpet from Palle Mikkelborg, electric piano from Kjell Ohman, and saxes from Lennart Aberg – all of whom do a really great job of shading in the more sophisticated grooves of the record. The session's unlike anything that Thigpen ever cut, and has a wonderfully rhythmic approach that shows off both sides of his work on the drums – full and funky one minute, more laidback and experimental the next! Titles include the funky break classic "Danish Drive", plus the longer "suite" tracks "House Of Poets" and "Action Re-Action". The album Resource was done in collaboration with violinist Sven Asmussen – and although a few cuts have a more traditional European jazz violin approach, there are others that showcase Thigpen's much hipper sound of the time! Asmussen plays his instrument in both acoustic and electric modes – sometimes in a spare, almost ethereal way on the former, and much harder jamming on the latter – and given that the quartet features some strong organ work from Kjell Ohmann and electric bass from Mads Vinding, the whole thing still has a pretty hip feel overall. Tracks are all longish, and Thigpen gets into some wonderful percussive moments that go far beyond traditional jazz drumming – melodic at moments, and even featuring a bit of vibes! Titles include the funky "Spirit Feel", plus "Resource", "Delsbo Waltz", and "St Louis Blues". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
