4.80 11

Seminal work from the post-Clyde McPhatter version of The Drifters – a sublime batch of singles that really showcase all that's great from the second chapter of the group! The set's way more than a "best of" – as it was the only full album to feature most of these cuts – and together, they really illustrate the excellent changes the group had made – including their alliance with the Leiber & Stoller team, and their great use of exotic rhythms and instrumentation! Some cuts still echo earlier R&B, while others have plenty of cool Latin elements in the mix too – a rhythm that really works well for the vocals of Ben E King's lead with the group. Titles include "Sweets For My Sweet", "There Goes My Baby", "Stranger On The Shore", "Save The Last Dance For Me", "When My Little Girl Is Smiling", "Ruby Baby", "True Love True Love","Another Night With The Boys", "What To Do", "Mexican Divorce", and "Room Full Of Tears". (Red & purple label pressing. Cover has discoloration due to age, some wear, some seam splitting, a bit of pen on the front, and small stains on the back.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Atlantic, 1965. Very Good-
A great little album by The Drifters – different than most of their other work for Atlantic, but still quite nice! The bulk of the album features the group running through jazzy versions of pop tunes – like "Quando Quando Quando", "More", "The Good Life", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Spinners Live
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A fascinating little record by The Spinners – and a real contrast to some of their other Atlantic albums! The set has them stepping out of the tightly controlled studio sound of their Philly albums – still working with Thom Bell on production, but doing so in a freer sort of live ... Atlantic/Mirage, 1981. Very Good+
The New York in the title is very apt – as the album's got a lot more soul, and a lot more solid club groove than some of Kano's other albums from the 80s! The overall feel is really great – moving along in a post-disco groove that's mostly based around spare rhythms, simple ... LP, Vinyl record album

Best Of Carla Thomas
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good
A great collection that features 14 of Carla's early hits for Stax – repackaged and remastered by Atlantic for this end of the 60s collection. The tracks run the gamut from sweet and youthful to harder soul material – and the album features 2 tracks recorded with Otis Redding, "Lov ... LP, Vinyl record album

Super Fly TNT
Buddah, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
Some nice heavy Afro-funk grooves, courtesy of Osibisa, for this follow-up score to the original Super Fly! The sound of the music is quite different than Curtis Mayfield's famous soundtrack – and there's lots of heavy bass and percussion, plus some additional arrangements by Michael Gibbs. ... Revolucion
AVI, 1980. Sealed
Latin inflected club grooves by the legendary El Coco! The band was one of the most successful projects of the Rinder/Lewis production team – and although this album's not their best, it's still very much in their classic mode. Most tracks are nice and long, with a disco groove, and titles ... LP, Vinyl record album
