A great 60s moment not just for reedman Charles Lloyd, but also for pianist Keith Jarrett – who was a key part of Charles' group for a few years at the time – and who really opens up on this classic set! Tracks are long and very open – reaching in a spiritual sort of way with definite Coltrane overtones, yet also showing that more complexly rhythmic mode that made Lloyd a standout in previous groups before he was a leader – a quality that's really augmented by the presence of Jack DeJohnette on drums! Lloyd plays both tenor and flute – and Jarrett switches to soprano sax on one number! Titles include"Journey Within", "Love No 3", "Memphis Green" and "Lonesome Child".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Discovery!/Nirvana
Columbia/Superbird (UK), 1964/1968. New Copy 2CD
2 Columbia killers from Charles Lloyd – back to back in a single set! Discovery is a wonderful bit of soul jazz – much less trippy than some of Lloyd's later work, and handled with a soulful flair that's a mix of Coltrane spiritualism, with an even larger dose of the sort of post-Trane ... CD

Hear & Now
Atlantic (Japan), 1977. New Copy
Important 70s work from Don Cherry – one of the first albums to bring his overseas experiments to a larger US audience! The set builds nicely off of styles that Don forged earlier in France and Scandinavia – a freer style of music than his work with Ornette Coleman, and a richly ... CD

Yusef Lateef's Detroit is a mighty funky one – a great summation of all the soulful sounds he'd crafted on previous records, but with a full groove that really points the way towards the 70s! Lateef's reeds are still the main attraction – great solos on tenor and flute – but ... CD

Atlantic (Japan), 1971. New Copy
A wonderful live set from Gary Burton – originally issued only in Japan, but a wonderful record that stands strongly with Gary's classic early 70s work for Atlantic and ECM Records! The group's a quartet – and has Gary's vibes alongside warm guitar lines from Sam Brown – a player ... CD

Grass Roots
Atlantic (Japan), 1965. New Copy
One of the few albums ever cut by drummer Grassella Oliphant – a soulful smoker that really shows the hip approach to jazz on Atlantic Records in the 60s! The album's got a tight groove that comes from superb efforts from a great quartet – Oliphant's drums in the lead, plus tenor from ... CD

To Whom Who Keeps A Record
Atlantic (Japan), 1959/1960. New Copy
Essential Ornette Coleman – and some great rare material pulled from his early days at Atlantic Records! The sides were recorded in 1959 and 1960 – but never issued until this format, a rare mid 70s album that was only issued in Japan! Despite that obscurity, though, the material is ... CD

Jonathan Scales Fourchestra
Ropeadope, 2013. New Copy
Pretty groovy work from Jonathan Scales – a steel drum player by trade, but one who works here in a mode that's light years from any basic use of the instrument! The core approach is jazz, but the music is also inflected by lots of little twists and turns – a pastiche of styles and ... CD
