Lars Gullin Vol 7 – Silhouette 1951 to 1953
CD (Item 587809) Dragon (Sweden), Early 50s — Condition: New Copy
Small group recordings from the great Lars Gullin – all recorded in Sweden in the early 50s, and issued by the Modern and Metronome labels on 10" and 7" vinyl releases! The first three tracks on the set are the rarest – as they were never issued at the time – material by a quartet that features Lars blowing beautifully on baritone, with great piano from Gunnar Svensson – on tunes that include "Alone", "The Continental", and "Stella By Starlight". Next are more great quartet tracks that have Rune Ofwerman on piano – on two takes of the tune "For Goofers Only", plus "All The Things You Are" and "You Go To My Head". Next are some of the best-known Gullin material to US listeners of the time – as they were also issued by Prestige as a 10" LP titled Lars Gullin & His Groups – making Gullin probably the most-issued European jazzman in the US during the postwar years! The music here is very much in keeping with the "groups" promised in the title – and Lars plays in an octet, quintet, and sextet – almost all of which have that tightly arranged, Swedish cool jazz approach. Titles include "Smooth Breeze", "Smart Alec", "Silhouette", "Merlin", "Apostrophe", "Disc Major", and "Colon". The last titles are from a very cool 10" album called Holiday For Piano – which came with a cover that had a "for sale" sign on a piano, and which has Gullin's group working piano-less – ala Gerry Mulligan – with Ake Persson's trombone sounding wonderful in the format, on titles that include "Sad Sally", "You Blew Out The Flame", "Holiday For Piano", "Night & Day", and "Brazil". Over 70 minutes of music – a real treasure at this price! © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
