Antelope Freeway/Equinox Express Elevator

CD (Item 581039) Impulse, 1971/1975 — Condition: New Copy

Amazing records from guitarist Howard Roberts – waaaay different than his 60s sides for Capitol Records! Antelope Freeway is an incredibly hip album from Roberts, a player best known for his simple and groovy work – but this far-reaching album on Impulse from the 70s has him moving into a baroque concept approach to jazz, in a manner that's similar to the work of David Axelrod from the same time. The record's sort of a trippy exploration of freeway culture in the US of the early 70s – and it's a montage of sound effects, atmospheric sounds, funky jazz, spare instrumentation, and a lot more. The record's got some nice breakaway licks and subtle grooves, but the real appeal is the overall package – which is pretty amazing. Titles include "Five Gallons Of Astral Flash Could Keep You Up For Thirteen Weeks", "Roadwork", "Sixteen Track Firemen", and "Dark Ominous Clouds". Equinox Express Elevator is a record we love – and for the keyboards as much as for the guitar! Although Howard Roberts has always been known around here as a great funky guitarist who's made some pretty sweet records, this record is totally unlike anything else he did in the early days, and it will blow your mind! The whole thing is sort of a complicated electronic instrumental suite in the David Axelrod mode – with Roberts playing crazy guitar over weird electronic passages and jazzy changes that are slow, spooky, and just ripe for sampling and production work. Roberts even plays a bit of moog guitar himself – and other keyboards include Fender Rhodes from Mike Wofford, organ from Dave Grusin, and more moog from Ed Michel! Titles include "Harold J Ostly The County Tax Assessor", "TTTT", "The Single On This Side", "Unfolding In", "Timelaps", "Slam", and "Mavro".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
