Leonard Feather Presents Bop
CD (Item 382593) Mode/VSOP, 1957 — Condition: New Copy
An unusual session, given the date – as 1957 would hardly be the year that anyone would need to "present bop" – but a great one nonetheless, and a record that we'd rank right up there with the best work of pianist George Wallington! The album's noteworthy not only because it's one of the few that George cut with a larger-than-trio group – but also because it features some great horn work by Phil Woods on alto, and either Thad Jones or Idrees Sulieman on trumpet. Tracks are short, and the energy is definitely boppish – but there's also a quality to the album has has some strong mid-50s Prestige touches – not long enough to be classified as hardbop, but spun out in a way that goes past the simple modes of the early bop years – even though Feather's notes, title, and overall presentation is clearly trying to push that agenda! Titles include "Lemon Drop", "Salt Peanuts", "Little Benny", "Billie's Bounce", and "Shaw Nuff". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
