We're not sure how we missed this one when it first came out, but we're mighty happy to have it around now – a smoking batch of funky numbers from an overlooked combo from France! Shaolin Temple Defenders really go for a classic funky 45 groove here – right rhythms that blast out of the gate on every number, thanks to super-tight basslines and drums – and vocals in English that are surprisingly strong, and really remind us of the offbeat singing you might hear on some indie 45s from the hinterland back in the late 60s and early 70s. Most vocals are shouted and called – a definite inspiration from James Brown, but handled with their own sort of flavor – and titles include "Burn Kill & Love", "Manimal", "The Real Thing", "Fist Of The Lion", "Don't Wanna Be", "Funky Chick", and "Soulville Bordeaux". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
