CD (Item 558491) Capitol (Japan), 1971 — Condition: New Copy
A very early album from Manhattan Transfer – recorded before their better-known 70s sets for Atlantic, and with a groove that's a bit different, too! The group still have a strong ear for jazz-based harmonies, but they're working here with a lead singer who also plays guitar – Gene Pistilli, who takes over some of the tunes, and gives them a warm early 70s LA approach – one that's informed by jazz, yet still swings out into other areas too – in that kind of hipster-retro way you might be more likely to find over at the Warner/Reprise side of the spectrum, with almost a slight link to Sunshine Pop too. The result is a pretty fresh album that's quite different than what you might expect from the group – with titles that include "Java Jive", "Fair & Tender Ladies", "You'se A Viper", "I Need A Man", "Chicken Bone Bone", and "Guided Missles". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
