Arne Domnerus & Orchestra 1950/1951
CD (Item 587807) Dragon (Sweden), 1950/1951 — Condition: New Copy
Classic recordings from one of Sweden's first great bandleaders of the postwar years – reedman Arne Domnerus, heard here with his orchestra of the early 50s – which includes some great work from trumpeter Rolf Ericson and baritonist Lars Gullin! Domnerus, Gullin, and Ericson made a bit of a splash on the American recording scene of the time – which is no surprise, given the strength of these sides, and their continuation of an American jazz groove of the 40s. There's a bit of bop in the mix, but overall the main approach is more of a swing-based one – recorded in shorter takes, but still with enough room to let the solos crackle out nicely. Domnerus is mostly playing alto on the tunes, but also plays a bit of clarinet – and other players include Gunnar Svensson on piano and Rolf Blomqvist on tenor sax.
