Ojos Chinos – Jala Jala

CD (Item 484406) Gema/Combo, 1964 — Condition: New Copy

The cover's alone is almost enough to make us fall in love with this one – but the grooves on the inside are even better – and are more than enough of an apology for the very silly image on the front! El Gran Combo are at the height of their early power here – really romping in a pre-boogaloo mode with lots of jala-jala rhythms – upbeat grooves that are topped with lots of jazzy horns, including some especially nice saxophone lines from Hector Santos, which really deepens the sound of the set. Lyrics are all in Spanish – sung by Pellin Rodriguez and Andy Montanez – but the groove definitely shows plenty of New York touches, with a nice undercurrent of soul on many numbers. Titles include "El Jala Jala", "Ojos Chinos", "La Rareza", "Te Quiero Ver", "Campesino", and "La Cocora".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
